In the presence of light, the TiO2 component initiates a photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) process. When exposed to light sources—such as UV or halogen lights—the TiO2-coated surface releases hydroxyl radicals (OH-) and superoxide anions (O2-), highly reactive agents that destroy harmful pathogens by breaking down their cellular structure.
These radicals quickly oxidize contaminants that come into contact with the coated surface, converting them into harmless by-products like CO2 and H2O. This process not only purifies the air but also reduces odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), improving overall air quality.

Due to the photocatalytic property of titanium dioxide (TiO2), its application may be dependent on the growing light environment. In this study, radish plants were cultivated under four light intensities (75, 150, 300, and 600 μmol m-2 s-1 photosynthetic photon flux density, PPFD), and were weekly sprayed (three times in total) with TiO2 nanoparticles at different concentrations (0, 50, and 100 μmol L-1).
